The Sonoma Center for Change (SCC) offers programs for adult residents seeking treatment for chemical dependency, substance abuse, and the underlying co-occuring conditions such as: anxiety, depression, PTSD, food, body image and eating disorders, emotional and relationship addictions, and co-dependency. Our residential, outpatient and aftercare counseling utilizes a practical and holistic approach to treating the nature of addiction and chemical dependency. We know that residents need to rediscover their authentic personal vision in a safe and nurturing environment with a personalized one-on-one care program. Through small therapy groups, a unique treatment program, and the ability to provide for individual needs, SCC sustains an uncompromising dedication to healing and recovery.
Substance Abuse
Substance abuse and addiction is a complex but treatable condition. It is characterized by compulsive drug craving, seeking, and use that persist even in the face of severe adverse consequences. For many people, drug addiction becomes chronic, with relapses even after long periods of abstinence. Through treatment at SCC, an abundant, productive, joyous life is possible.
At the Sonoma Center for Change we understand that addictions and trauma are intrinsically related. Our recovery program is designed to address both the addictive patterns and the underlying pain. The ultimate goal of our treatment program is to enable an individual to achieve lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This is accomplished through the immediate goals of reduced craving, improved functioning, and minimized medical and social complications from substance abuse. Once a solid foundation of abstinence has been created, then significant inner work can begin.
Our specialized recovery program provides the opportunity to regain personal strength, integrity and vision through the transformation of limiting beliefs about the self, others, and the world. The Sonoma Center for Change is committed to being a leader in healing and transformation by providing the highest quality behavioral health services available.

Drug Addiction
Often people who are suffering emotionally use drugs to escape from their problems. This self-medication of loneliness, unhappy relationships, stress, and low self-esteem can create a pattern that may lead to drug addiction.
- A strong or overwhelming desire to use a drug of choice at a specific time of day or several times a day.
- Feeling that the drug must be used to deal with problems.
- Trying to stop using but failing more than once.
- Making sure that you maintain a supply of the drug.
- Doing things to obtain the drug that you wouldn't normally do, such as stealing.
- In order to attain the same effect, the drug is used more frequently and more than intended.
- Loss of interest in activities and hobbies that were once pleasurable.
- The inability to keep commitments to self, friends, family or work.
Drug Addiction Treatment
Our treatment for drug addiction breaks the physical habit as well as addresses the emotional, mental or spiritual issues that are often the underlying causes of drug abuse. We will equip you with all the tools need to successfully embark upon and maintain recovery and to live an honest life of integrity and sobriety.
Alcoholism
Friends and family members of an alcoholic often recognize the signs of the abuse long before the drinker is willing to overcome their denial of the warning signs. Treatment for alcoholism begins when a person recognizes that they can not quit drinking on their own; that alcohol is in control of their life.
- Consuming larger amounts of alcohol over a longer than intended period of time.
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut down or stop drinking.
- Continued use of alcohol despite knowing it is contributing to physical and/or psychological problems.
- Spending abnormal amounts of time obtaining, using and/or recovering from the effects of alcohol.
- Eliminating important social, work-related or recreational activities.
- When drinking has stopped for a short period, the drinker experiences nausea, sweating, shaking or anxiety.
- The drinker requires increasing amounts of alcohol to reach the same level of intoxification.
Alcoholism Treatment
At SCC, alcohol rehabilitation is conducted by our professional staff who are specifically trained to help with withdrawal symptoms, relapse prevention and the exploration on an individual's life patterns and beliefs that may have lead to the alcohol abuse. A joyful existence free from the mental and physical grip of the addiction is possible, and residents will learn the skills necessary to lead a healthy, sober, self-actualized life.
Co-Occurring Disorders
Co-occurring disorders (COD) occur when at least one behavioral health disorder can be established independent of substance abuse or dependence. People with substance abuse disorders frequently have other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, personality, or bi-polar disorders. In addition, often alcoholism and drug addiction are symptoms of an underlying emotional or psychiatric illness. Sonoma Center for Change treatment programs are designed to provide a comprehensive set of assessment, treatment and recovery services for both addiction and mental health issues when they occur together. Through dual diagnosis, residents with co-occurring disorders are engaged in the stabilization of their mental health issue along side treatment of any substance abuse. Our professional, dedicated staff is trained in and our programs specialized for the treatment of co-occurring conditions so that both conditions can be treated fully for lasting, lifelong recovery.
Dual Diagnosis and Eating Disorders
At their core, eating disorders presuppose self-critical and distorted beliefs around weight, food, and body image. These negative thoughts fuel the damaging behaviors of rigid diets, gorging on food in secret, obsessing over calories, and throwing up after meals. Those with eating disorders are often using food to manage feelings of helplessness, self-loathing, sadness, anger, and other painful and uncomfortable emotions or control issues. The longer an eating disorder remains undiagnosed and untreated the more damaging it is on the body and mind and as with other addictions, the more difficult it is to overcome. SCC’s programming addresses food and body image issues congruently with substance abuse and behavioral health disorders.
The Sonoma Center for Change believes that a full recovery from eating disorders is possible. The structure of our program is tailored around the individual’s needs and is supported by the serenity and support of a natural healing environment. Our professional counseling staff is committed to helping individuals discover or rediscover their innate beauty and potential while establishing healthy eating and exercise patterns that nourish body, mind and soul. Our integrated and holistic treatment has proven to be an optimal path to a spontaneous, thriving life.
